At E3 2021, Bethesda announced that Starfield will be exclusive to Xbox and PC when it releases in 2022, finally bringing some closure to the uncertainty about where the game will show up after Microsoft acquired ZeniMax/Bethesda. Now, game director Todd Howard has spoken a little more about the exclusivity deal, while intriguingly alluding to the possibility of Starfield being available “for everybody” at some point in the future.
Howard said being able to focus exclusively on Xbox and PC is in the best interests of Starfield, though he also feels for PlayStation users who will miss out.
“You don’t ever want to leave people out, right?” he told The Telegraph. “But at the end of the day, your ability to focus and say, this is the game I want to make, these are the platforms I want to make it on, and being able to really lean in on those is going to make for a better product.”
Howard went on to say that Bethesda is a “big believer” in Microsoft’s ambition to expand the reach of Xbox through streaming, TV manufacturer partnerships, and Game Pass.
“So I think it’s about taking a long term view. And our belief that those things are really fundamentally good. So we see it actually opening up more and more and more so that people’s ability to play our games–via GamePass and other things–their ability to play our games doesn’t go down. It goes up dramatically.”
Asked if Howard has any regrets about Starfield not coming to PlayStation, the developer had to choose his words carefully, it seems.
“Well, we’re still…I will just say I want everybody to have the ability to play it in some fashion.”
That quote is intriguing because it seems to leave open some wiggle room for Starfield to be available on other platforms, but it remains to be seen if this will be the case. He may also be referring to Starfield coming to streaming. We’ll report back when we know more.
Starfield releases on November 11, 2022 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. It’s basically a Han Solo simulator, according to Bethesda. The first new IP from Bethesda in 25 years, Starfield takes players to outer space where they can forge their own character and stories.
