Starbreeze has revealed more details on the long-awaited Payday 3. As part of the franchise’s 10th anniversary livestream event, game director Erik Wonnevi shared new insight on the game, starting off by confirming it is indeed set in New York City.
Revealed at around 3:01:20 of the livestream, Wonnevi shared that the game will feature a big, breathing version of New York City. And in a new twist, the in-universe media will cover the Payday heisters and their exploits. “And who knows what might come from that,” Starbreeze said.
It was also confirmed that Payday 3 takes place “several” years after the events of Payday 2. The gang retired and shifted into a life of relaxation. But the original four characters–Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf–are brought back to a life of crime. The times have changed, however, with the dark web, the digital age, cryptocurrencies, and mass surveillance leading the way, all of which present a new set of challenges and opportunities for the gang.
Some new concept art for Payday 3 was released as well–you can see the livestream and the artwork below.
Payday 3 is scheduled for release in 2023. In a big shift, Starbreeze signed a €50 million deal with Koch Media’s Prime Matter to fund the game.
